SMART-Transportation Division held its Eastern Regional Meeting in Chicago, Illinois from Saturday, July 23, 2016 through Wednesday, July 27, 2016.

Designated Legal Counsel and FELA Attorneys for SMART-Transportation Division
The law firm of Harrington, Thompson, Acker & Harrington, Ltd. was represented at the meeting by four attorneys and two investigators who remained present throughout the duration of the week’s activities.
Robert E. Harrington, III presented at the Designated Legal Counsel ninety minute educational seminar to all SMART-TD members Monday morning. This presentation was designed to further educate SMART-TD officers to the rights of railroad employees subsequent to on-duty injury under the Federal Employers’ Liability Act and how to contact a FELA lawyer in the event of personal injury. In addition, the seminar also focused on railroad employee rights under the whistle-blower protections of the Federal Rail Safety Act. Attendance at the event was high and the questions posed during the question and answer session were pointed and highly relevant to today’s railroad work climate.
The trial attorneys at Harrington, Thompson, Acker & Harrington, Ltd. along with staff continued the education process with SMART-TD members Monday night at a law firm sponsored event at Pinstripes Bistro along the North Branch of the Chicago River. The event was designed to both further educate members to their legal rights, as well as provide a forum for individuals to socialize and discuss various common issues that may arise within their workplace.
The workshops on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 were highlighted by the new “Investigations and Discipline” presentation made by 1st Vice General Chairperson (GO-049) Jamie Modesitt. This new presentation replaced the former “No Rules” presentation which had been given for many years at Regional Meetings. Mr. Modesitt’s presentation was received with very high reviews from all in attendance. His thorough and thoughtful presentation educating officers on how to best represent members facing discipline is the type of specialized training one can expect when attending a SMART-TD Regional Meeting.
The Meeting concluded on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 with a motivating speech by Transportation Division President John Previsich addressing the ongoing negotiations with the carriers to obtain a national agreement as well as the importance of the upcoming 2016 federal elections.
The attorneys at Harrington, Thompson, Acker & Harrington, Ltd. are proud to have been active participants in the 2016 Chicago Regional Meeting and look forward to the announcement of the location of the 2017 events.
